Much Shelist

A View from the Chair

By Edward D. Shapiro

As Chair of the Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice group at Much Shelist, I would like to share several recent milestones that enhance our ability to help our clients achieve their business goals. It is never our objective to simply improve our personal scorecard of wins and losses. Rather, we work with each client to establish goals and to identify effective options that either prevent or resolve business challenges. With that goal in mind, we have expanded the depth of the Litigation & Dispute Resolution group with the recent addition of four seasoned attorneys: Louis D. Bernstein, Scott R. FradinMatthew S. Miller and Joseph A. Spiegler.

An experienced litigator and business advisor, Lou Bernstein brings more than 20 years of experience counseling clients and trying, arbitrating and mediating cases in all areas of commercial litigation, including creditors’ rights, real estate, employment and corporate/partnership disputes. Matt Miller is also an experienced litigator and business counselor. Having previously founded and managed his own law firm, Matt has an understanding not only of litigation, but also of what it means to run a business.

Scott Fradin draws on his significant experience as both an attorney and a licensed architect to counsel owners, architects, engineers and contractors in a wide range of construction-related matters. Joe Spiegler enhances our strength in corporate compliance and investigations, as well as white collar criminal matters – areas that unfortunately challenge more and more businesses every day. With the addition of Lou, Scott, Matt and Joe, our group now numbers approximately 30 attorneys and paralegals. We continue to attract experienced professionals who embody the highest ideals of character, integrity and judgment—principles that are important to our firm and our clients.

In other exciting news, the Litigation & Dispute Resolution group has instituted a "real-time" skills-based training program for our Associates. That means each Principal in the group treats every interaction with an Associate as a teaching moment. We believe strongly that this approach enhances not only our Associates' skills, but also their ability to serve our clients in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

It is my great pleasure to work with such an outstanding group of professionals who are dedicated to helping our clients achieve "sooner and better" outcomes. When challenges arise (and in business, they always do), I encourage you to contact one of my colleagues or me. We will be happy to respond in whatever way you need – whether to act as a sounding board, to brainstorm ideas, or to offer our best advice about how to address a potential or existing problem. We look forward to continuing to serve you.
