Much Shelist Celebrates Diversity

On Monday, January 16, Much Shelist will honor the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of firmwide activities that celebrate diversity. Billed as the first annual "Diversity Day," the event kicks off with the distribution of the "2006 Honoring Differences Diversity Calendar" and a copy of the firm's formal diversity statement to all attorneys and staff. Monday afternoon, Texas attorney and author Mark Curriden will discuss his critically acclaimed book, Contempt of Court: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching that Launched 100 Years of Federalism, which chronicles the 1906 lynching of a wrongfully convicted black man and the ensuing U.S. Supreme Court case that signaled a change in America's legal system. The firm will also distribute thought-provoking internal communications throughout the week that address a broad range of diversity issues, including race, gender, sexual orientation and people with disabilities.

"Our diversity makes the firm a stronger, better and more productive place," said Mindy Morales and Norm Newman, Co-Chairs of the Diversity Subcommittee of the firm's Professional Development Initiative. "We hope this event not only commemorates the great work and vision of Martin Luther King Jr., but also reminds each of us of the wonderful opportunities that diversity can bring into our lives."
