AT WORK

Matthew S. Miller has a unique practice that combines significant litigation experience with a substantial general counsel practice.

As a trial attorney, Matt has worked at one of the largest litigation firms in the country, and is highly experienced in the courtroom. He has successfully tried cases before judges and juries in federal and state courts. Matt also has helped clients achieve favorable decisions through mediation, arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution, and he often assists clients in resolving disputes out of court or avoiding disputes altogether.

Matt has won substantial verdicts on behalf of plaintiffs — including a record-setting verdict in Mercer County, Illinois — and has obtained complete defense victories when his clients have been sued. Matt also has negotiated significant settlements and has a strong track record of obtaining favorable court rulings on motions. His litigation experience has touched on all facets of the law, including fraud, trade secrets, partnership disputes, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, restrictive covenants, professional negligence, and personal injury and wrongful death.

In addition to his significant courtroom experience, Matt serves as general counsel to high-net-worth individuals and closely held companies, providing them with legal and business guidance on all matters. As a valued advisor, he has assisted his clients in connection with real estate transactions, entity formation, employee issues, wealth management and a host of other issues. Matt often works with experts in other practice areas to ensure that his clients’ business and personal goals are being met.

Before joining Much Shelist, Matt founded and managed his own law firm, giving him a deep understanding of the issues facing today’s business owners. Complementing his legal practice, Matt has hands-on business experience as an entrepreneur, further enhancing his ability to understand his clients’ needs. In fact, while many of his clients first come to him for litigation and trial work, they subsequently rely on him for broader business and legal counsel.

IN THE PROFESSION

A highly experienced legal instructor, Matt has been qualified as a Certified Trial Instructor by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, and he has served as a faculty member for NITA’s Midwest Region. He also has served as a member of the faculty teaching trial advocacy at Loyola University Chicago School of Law and the Chicago Bar Association College of Trial Lawyers Intensive Advocacy Course. Matt also has coached the trial teams for Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

Matt is a member of the American, Illinois State and Chicago Bar Associations, as well as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and the College of Master Advocates and Barristers. He has served on the Board of the Decalogue Society of Lawyers.

While in law school, Matt was a member and Editor-at-Large of the Loyola Law Journal, and was National and Regional Champion in the American College of Trial Lawyers’ National Trial Competition. Matt was one of the initial recipients of the Philip H. Corboy Fellowship in Trial Advocacy.

In addition, Matt served as a Judicial Extern to the Honorable Ruben Castillo of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Matt is committed to helping deliver high-quality legal services to indigent and underserved populations. In 2005, he received the Distinguished Service Award from Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. He has donated his time as a volunteer attorney for the American Jewish Congress, and as a member of the Governing Council for the Midwest Region. He also served as a Public Interest Law Initiative Fellow with the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago.

Currently a member of the Board of Directors of Christopher House, Matt also has served on the Boards of the John Howard Association, the Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Lend-A-Hand Program and the Parkways Foundation. In addition, he is active as a youth soccer coach with the AYSO Chicago Lakefront Region.
