Jeffrey M. Schwartz, a Principal in the firm's Creditors' Rights, Insolvency & Bankruptcy group, focuses his practice on the representation of secured and unsecured creditors in business reorganizations under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code and in out-of-court restructurings. He also represents buyers and sellers of financially distressed companies and distressed debt, and regularly advises lenders, creditors' committees, indenture trustees, debtors and other parties involved in bankruptcy-related matters.

Jeffrey has represented clients in numerous Chapter 11 cases, restructurings and asset purchases involving a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, retail, mining, insurance, aviation and travel, utilities, gaming, food packaging and environmental services.

IN THE PROFESSION

Throughout his career, Jeffrey has been recognized locally and nationally for his legal acumen and commitment to client service. In 2004, he was named by Turnarounds & Workouts magazine as one of 12 outstanding young bankruptcy lawyers in the country. Jeffrey has been recognized by the Leading Lawyers Network as a top Illinois lawyer in the areas of commercial bankruptcy/workout law and creditor's rights/commercial collections (2009-2012). He has also been designated an Illinois Super Lawyer (2005-2012), an honor given to the top 5% of attorneys in the state, has been listed in Best Lawyers in America and is rated AV® PreeminentTM 5.0 out of 5. Jeffrey is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Chicago Bar Association, where he served as president of the Bankruptcy and Reorganization Committee.

Jeffrey has written on a variety of bankruptcy-related topics, including asset purchases and sales, professional ethics and fees, and post-confirmation issues. His published articles include "Managing Environmental Claims in Bankruptcy" for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Education (2001) and "Professional Compensation: Does Bankruptcy Cost Too Much" for the American Bankruptcy Institute National Symposium Series. He also served as a contributing editor for the 1997-2001 editions of the Wiley Bankruptcy Law Update.

While in law school, Jeffrey served as a judicial extern for the Honorable William V. Altenberger in the Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of Illinois.
