Shawn M. Staples, an Associate in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution group, focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation, appellate litigation, and government law and litigation. A member of the firm's Financial Crisis Response Team, Shawn also has assisted clients in the collection of defaulted debt, including litigating commercial real estate foreclosures and Uniform Commercial Code disputes and sales. He has composed a myriad of briefs and motions to the Illinois Supreme Court; the Illinois Appellate Court, First District; the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; and the Circuit Court of Cook County.
IN THE PROFESSION
During law school, Shawn served as a senior-certified intern at the Scott County Attorney's Office in Davenport, Iowa. While there, he gained critical courtroom experience by participating as first-chair in jury trials, felony juvenile delinquency trials and motion hearings. Shawn was a member of the Creighton Law Review, which published his article titled "Nothing Sacred: The Supreme Court Erroneously Abandoned the Establishment Clause's Foundational Principles" (April 2006). Shawn also won the All-School International Moot Court Competition and competed in both the National Trial Competition and the National Moot Court Competition.
As an undergraduate at St. Ambrose University, Shawn served as President of the student body and received the Frank and Jane Folwell Award in Political Science and Pre-Law.
Shawn is a member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association.
